Voluntary Sector Steering Group

The East Riding Local Strategic Partnership has co-ordinated the development of the East Riding Compact through a sub-group, the Compact Steering Group. It launched the East Riding Compact Principles in May 2005, to which approximately 100 organisations have now signed up.

Five of the Compact Principles have been developed into detailed Codes of Practice as follows:-

  • Consultation, Participation and Policy Appraisal.

  • Diverse Communities: Black and Minority Ethnic Groups.

  • Volunteering and Capacity Building.

  • Community Groups.

  • Funding, Commissioning and Resources.

The other three Compact Principles - Equal Partnership Working, Equalities and Improving Communications - were not developed into national codes of practice and this approach was replicated locally.

East Riding LSP hosted the first event of National Compact Week in England in November 2006, providing national recognition for the work being undertaken locally with the voluntary and community sectors to build strong partner relations. The event promoted awareness and assisted in the implementation of the Compact Codes across the Council and other public and voluntary and community sector organisations.

The LSP Manager is now working with Compact Steering Group members regarding the implementation of the Compact. During 2007 his will include: -

  • A roll-out of the Compact to voluntary and community sector organisations through four workshops being facilitated by East Riding Voluntary Action Services (ERVAS).

  • The implementation of a rolling compact evaluation process. ERVAS will facilitate this for voluntary and community sector organisations and the LSP Manager for public sector bodies.

  • The creation and circulation of a short publication for all organisations outlining the key benefits of the Compact process.

  • The organisation of a second Compact Week Event in November 2007 to evaluate implementation and identify further implementation opportunities where appropriate.

  • The East Riding Compact Steering Group will continue to meet on a quarterly basis to monitor Compact implementation.
